Pakistan Did It for Bangladesh: Mohsin Naqvi After Boycott Reversal

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan wanted nothing for itself as the India match boycott was lifted.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan did not seek any personal benefit while taking its stand during the T20 World Cup 2026 boycott episode, even as reports surfaced that the ICC turned down several PCB requests. His remarks came shortly before Pakistan confirmed a reversal of its decision to skip the India match scheduled for February 15 in Colombo.

Pakistan had earlier declined to face India as a gesture of support for Bangladesh, who exited the tournament after refusing to travel to India due to security concerns. The PCB described its move as a response to what it viewed as unequal treatment by the ICC. Intense discussions then followed, involving the ICC, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UAE, and Pakistan’s government, with strong emphasis on the sporting and commercial value of the fixture.

Naqvi stated that Pakistan’s stance focused only on backing Bangladesh. He added that the decision to play came after Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam requested Pakistan to proceed once the issue was addressed through ICC-led talks.

Mohsin Naqvi’s Claims Clash With Media Reports

However, Naqvi’s remarks differed from media reports earlier in the day about talks with ICC officials. Those reports said the PCB raised extra demands during discussions. The requests included restarting India-Pakistan bilateral cricket, which the ICC declined. A proposed tri-series involving India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh was also rejected due to jurisdiction limits.

Naqvi also reportedly discussed the Asia Cup trophy issue with ICC vice-chairman Imran Khwaja in Lahore. The ICC later confirmed no penalty for Bangladesh and granted hosting rights for 2028–2031. Bangladesh then thanked Pakistan and requested participation on February 15. The Pakistan government soon directed the team to play.
