The BCCI is reviewing Gautam Gambhir’s role as India’s Test coach after recent losses, with his future likely tied to the team’s performance at the T20 World Cup.
Gautam Gambhir has enjoyed success as India’s white-ball coach, winning ICC and ACC titles, but his Test record has raised questions within the board. India has suffered 10 Test defeats in SENA conditions during his tenure. After a disappointing two-Test series loss to South Africa last month, discussions began inside the Board of Control for Cricket in India about the red-ball setup.
According to reports from PTI, senior figures informally explored alternatives, including VVS Laxman. Still, he remains committed to his role as Head of Cricket at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Gambhir’s contract runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup, yet his Test role may be reassessed after the upcoming T20 World Cup in five weeks.

“Gambhir does have a strong backing within the power corridors of Indian cricket, and obviously, if India retain the T20 World Cup or at least reach the final, he would be seamlessly continuing with his assignment. However, it would be interesting if Gambhir continues in Tests too,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying to PTI.
“His advantage being (that there) aren’t too many alternate options in red ball format since VVS Laxman isn’t interested in coaching the senior Test team,” the report added.
Uncertainty Grows Inside Indian Dressing Room
Several players are also reportedly feeling less assured compared to the stable environment under Rahul Dravid, where roles were clearly defined. The exclusion of Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup squad has added to concerns about selection security.
Within the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI), major decisions are rarely rushed. The period after the T20 World Cup, followed by two months of the IPL, is expected to offer time for a full review.
Meanwhile, India still has nine Tests left in the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. With overseas tours to Sri Lanka and New Zealand ahead, followed by a five-Test home series against Australia, the BCCI continues internal discussions. No official decision has been announced.
