The BCCI clarified that the rumours about Virat Kohli returning to Test cricket are false and that no such discussion has taken place.
Virat Kohli delivered a strong reply to his critics by producing a superb century in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. He scored 135 runs off 120 balls. Kohli’s Test retirement had raised doubts about how long he could continue, especially with the 2027 World Cup still two years away.
Social media buzzed with claims that the BCCI planned to ask Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin to rethink their Test retirements after India’s recent 0–2 loss in the format.
However, BCCI has now shut down this speculation. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said there had been no discussion with Kohli about returning to Test cricket. He also urged fans not to believe unverified reports.

“What’s being said about Virat Kohli is just a rumour. There has been no conversation with Kohli about this. Do not give weight to rumours. Nothing of that sort has happened,” Saikia told AajTak.
Pietersen Says Kohli and Rohit Should Return If They Choose To
Kevin Pietersen also weighed in on the growing speculation, saying that if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli genuinely wished to play Test cricket again, the game would benefit from their return.
“I don’t always believe what I read in the media or on social media. But, if it’s half true that both Virat and Rohit are considering playing Test cricket again, then it needs to be taken very, very seriously,” Pietersen had wrote on the social media platform, X.
“The survival of Test cricket is a hot topic of conversation, and if the biggest stars in the game want to play it again, they must play,” he added.
