England Test captain Ben Stokes has thrown his full support behind head coach Brendon McCullum following England’s recent Ashes setback. Despite a heavy 4-1 defeat in the iconic The Ashes, the duo will continue in their respective roles, with the England management backing their long-term vision.
Addressing speculation around their partnership, Stokes dismissed any talk of a rift and instead highlighted the strength of their collaboration.
“I am very confident in my and Brendon’s ability to be able to work together. We have done it for such a long period of time now. But [we] work together in a slightly different way,” Stokes said while speaking to the England Cricket Board.
Ben Stokes Learning From Setbacks
The Ashes defeat brought England’s leadership under scrutiny, but Stokes remains optimistic about the future. He emphasized that both he and McCullum share a unified goal of building a successful Test side and restoring England’s dominance.
“The main point of Brendon and me is our alignment towards winning things and making this team as good as they can be,” Stokes added.
Reflecting on their journey so far, the England skipper stressed the importance of continuity and trust in their working relationship. He believes their shared experiences over the years have created a strong foundation that can help the team bounce back stronger.

‘Heart and Soul’ Commitment to England’s Success
Stokes also spoke emotionally about the effort both he and McCullum have invested in shaping the team over the past four years. He made it clear that he cannot envision working with anyone else in pursuit of England’s Test ambitions.
“With what Brendon and I were able to achieve with the group over four years, I just could not imagine doing what we were trying to do with anyone else. We are both very proud men of what we do,” Stokes said.
“We put a lot of our heart and soul into this job. Brendon certainly has for the four years he has done it so far and hopefully we will still be together at the end of 2027, winning what we want to win,” Stokes added.
With England preparing for a crucial home summer, the Stokes-McCullum partnership remains central to the team’s hopes of reclaiming their Test glory.
