David Miller’s suspected groin injury had put his T20 World Cup 2026 participation under serious doubt as South Africa dealt with growing fitness concerns.
South Africa’s star batter David Miller is racing against time to regain full fitness ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup after suffering a suspected groin injury during an SA20 match for the Paarl Royals. The incident occurred while Miller was fielding in the Royals’ clash against the Joburg Super Kings on Monday.
Miller appeared visibly uncomfortable following the injury and was forced to leave the field in the 16th over. He did not return to bat during Paarl Royals’ chase, which immediately raised concerns over the seriousness of the issue.
As of now, the exact nature and severity of the injury remain unclear. The Paarl Royals have not released a detailed medical update, and Miller himself offered little clarity after the match.
“I don’t know, we’ll see tomorrow when I pick up. Obviously not ideal,” Miller said. The Paarl Royals are scheduled to face the Joburg Super Kings again in the Eliminator on Thursday, January 22. Whether Miller will be fit in time for that crucial encounter remains uncertain. More significantly, the injury has cast doubt over his availability for the T20 World Cup.

South Africa are set to begin their World Cup campaign on February 9 against Canada in Ahmedabad. With the tournament only weeks away, any injury setback at this stage is a major concern for the team management.
Miller has now become the third member of South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad to suffer an injury in the build-up to the tournament. Donovan Ferreira earlier fractured his shoulder and has already been ruled out of the ongoing SA20, while Tony de Zorzi continues his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained on December 20.
These repeated injury concerns have increased pressure on the South African camp ahead of the global event. The team will be hoping Miller’s issue is not serious, as his experience and finishing ability remain vital to their T20 plans and could play a decisive role in their World Cup campaign.
