India head coach Gautam Gambhir stayed focused on cricket as Pakistan confirmed it would not play India at the T20 World Cup 2026, triggering strong reactions across the cricket world.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir refused to engage with media questions on Pakistan’s controversial boycott threat as he departed for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. His response sent a clear message that his focus remained firmly on cricket despite the growing controversy.
When reporters asked him about the situation, the former India opener ignored the question and walked straight past the media, only acknowledging their good wishes.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s government confirmed that its team would travel for the T20 World Cup but would not take the field against India in the high-profile Group A match scheduled for February 15 in Colombo.
Pakistan’s decision to skip the marquee clash, without offering detailed reasons, left the cricketing world uncertain about the future of the fixture. In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board also received a strong reaction from the International Cricket Council.

India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign on February 7 against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This tournament will mark Gambhir’s second ICC assignment as India head coach. He previously led the team to victory in the Champions Trophy in 2025.
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal strongly criticised the ICC while backing Pakistan’s decision to boycott the India match. He referred to past tournaments and questioned the governing body’s consistency.
“PCB should not back down! The ICC has told the Pakistan Cricket Board to reconsider its stance of boycotting the India game. Was ICC sleeping when the Asia Cup happened in the hybrid model? Was ICC sleeping when India said it would not play the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and only play on a neutral venue? How many times has Pakistan played in India, despite the heightened tensions between the two countries. I have gone myself,” Akmal said on his YouTube channel.
