BCCI Backs Gautam Gambhir Even After 2-0 Defeat vs SA At Home

Gautam Gambhir Opens Up After India’s Test Defeat vs SA

The BCCI decided to retain Gautam Gambhir as head coach after India’s Test series loss to South Africa.

The BCCI has confirmed it will not remove Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach despite a 2-0 Test series loss to South Africa. This marks India’s third Test series defeat under his leadership in 16 months.

India’s Test record under Gambhir now stands at 7 wins, 10 losses, and 2 draws from 19 matches. This gives him a win percentage of 36.82. Previous series losses include a 3-0 home defeat to New Zealand and a 3-1 away loss to Australia.

BCCI Backs Gambhir Despite Losses

A BCCI official stated the board will not make a rushed decision. “The BCCI will not rush in taking any decision, the team is in a transition phase. As far as coach Gautam Gambhir is concerned, we will not take any decision on him as the World Cup is around the corner and his contract is till the 2027 World Cup. The BCCI will speak to selectors and team management going ahead but there won’t be any knee jerk action,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying to The Indian Express.

Following the defeat, Gambhir stated his future rests with the board. “It is up to the BCCI to decide. I’ve said it in my first press conference when I took over as the head coach. Indian cricket is important, I’m not important. And I sit here and say exactly the same thing,” Gambhir was quoted as saying at the post-match press conference.

He also reminded critics of his past successes. “And yes, people can keep forgetting about it. I’m the same guy who got results in England as well, with a young team. And I’m sure you guys will forget very soon, because a lot of people keep talking about New Zealand (home series whitewash last year). And I’m the same guy who won the Champions Trophy, and Asia Cup as well,” Gambhir added.
