Gautam Gambhir addressed India’s Test series loss to South Africa and urged patience for youngsters.
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir shouldered the blame for the team’s heavy Test defeat against South Africa. He spoke after South Africa completed a 2-0 series whitewash.
A young Indian team, led by Shubman Gill, struggled throughout the series. The loss has impacted India’s standing in the World Test Championship rankings.
“I’m the same guy under whom India did well in England, won the Champions Trophy, and won the Asia Cup. I’ve said it in the past as well that I hate the word “transition,” and I’m not here to give excuses, but this is exactly what transition is. The young players are learning on the job. You’ve to give them time,” Gambhir said in the press conference, as per Revsportz.
Gambhir’s Firm Stance After Loss
Gambhir described the team’s batting collapses as unacceptable. He emphasized the need for mental and technical improvement in Test cricket after the Guwahati defeat.
“The way we played, if you follow this Test series. At one point we were 95/1 and 120 for 6 or 7. This kind of performance is not acceptable. The reality is we need to improve in Test cricket, whether it is mentally, technically, or absorbing pressure. Most importantly, not for the gallery,” Gambhir added.
When asked about assigning blame, the coach was clear. He stated that the responsibility is shared by the entire group, starting with himself.
“We win together, we lose together. Not going to point out anyone in particular. The blame lies at the feet of everyone, starting with me. Start prioritizing Test cricket. If we want Test cricket to flourish in India, we have to collectively do it. So more than the accountability, it’s about the care,” Gambhir added.
The Indian team will now focus on the upcoming white-ball leg of the tour. The T20I series is scheduled to begin on December 9.
