England pacer Gus Atkinson suffered a concussion scare during Surrey’s County Championship clash, adding to the team’s growing fast-bowling injury concerns before the New Zealand Tests.
England fast bowler Gus Atkinson faced an injury scare during Surrey’s Rothesay County Championship clash against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on Sunday, May 10. The right-arm pacer, who already has a Test century to his name, was struck twice on the helmet while batting against fellow England speedster Josh Tongue.
Despite the heavy blows, Atkinson initially continued batting after clearing on-field concussion assessments conducted by the team physio. However, the situation later worsened as the Surrey all-rounder required additional medical attention before eventually retiring hurt on 27. Surrey subsequently brought in Reece Topley as a concussion substitute.

Speaking after the match, Surrey head coach Gareth Batty provided an update on the England seamer’s condition.
“Gus passed the tests on the field, otherwise he would not have been able to stay out there. He felt like he was OK, but duty of care comes into it. I don’t know the ins and outs of what exactly happened but it clearly came to a point where he had to come off. He’s OK in himself,” Surrey head coach Gareth Batty was quoted as saying via BBC Sport.
England Selectors Face Fresh Pace-Bowling Concerns
Atkinson’s injury has now become another major concern for England ahead of their upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand, which is scheduled to begin in early June. England are already dealing with multiple injury setbacks among their pace-bowling options.
Brydon Carse and Mark Wood are currently recovering from injuries, while Atkinson and Josh Tongue were expected to lead England’s pace attack for the opening Test against New Zealand. The latest concussion scare could now force selectors to rethink their bowling combinations depending on Atkinson’s recovery timeline.
However, England still have several backup options available in domestic cricket. Surrey pacer Matt Fisher, who previously came into the Ashes setup as Mark Wood’s replacement, remains in contention for a recall.
Meanwhile, Sussex captain Ollie Robinson has also strengthened his case for a return to international cricket following an impressive beginning to the new County Championship campaign. The experienced seamer has already picked up 11 wickets before Sussex’s fixture against Leicestershire.
Ben Stokes Returns To Action In Positive News For England
While England continue to deal with injury concerns among their fast bowlers, there was positive news surrounding Test captain Ben Stokes. The all-rounder made a successful return to competitive cricket after regaining full fitness.
Representing Durham in Division Two against Worcestershire, Stokes shared the new ball alongside Ben Raine and delivered a strong all-round bowling display.

The England skipper claimed four wickets in the match, taking two wickets in each innings to guide Durham to a commanding nine-wicket victory inside three days at New Road Ground in Worcester.
Stokes’ return will come as a massive boost for England management as they prepare for a busy home Test summer, especially with uncertainties continuing around the availability of several frontline pace bowlers.
