Liam Dawson announced his retirement from first-class cricket after scoring over 10,000 runs and taking 350 wickets for Hampshire.
Liam Dawson announced his immediate retirement from first-class cricket, ending a remarkable red-ball journey with Hampshire. The 36-year-old all-rounder will continue representing the county in white-ball competitions, including the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup.
Dawson explained that he made the decision to extend his limited-overs career and continue contributing in shorter formats. The experienced cricketer featured in four County Championship Division One matches this season and picked up seven wickets before injury ruled him out against Glamorgan. Hampshire endured a difficult campaign start after winning only one and losing four of their first five matches.

During his outstanding first-class career, Dawson played more than 200 matches for Hampshire, scoring over 10,000 runs and taking more than 350 wickets. He established himself as one of the county’s finest modern-day all-rounders across formats.
Speaking after the announcement, Dawson thanked Hampshire supporters and teammates for their backing throughout his career and described the club as his cricketing home while confirming his commitment to white-ball cricket moving forward.
“This is a decision that I haven’t taken lightly but I feel for the benefit of prolonging my career in white-ball cricket, the time is right. I’m extremely proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and have had some amazing memories with so many players over the years,” Dawson was quoted as saying by BBC.
“I’m fully committed to playing white-ball cricket for Hampshire and continuing the success we’ve had. To the fans and members who have turned out over the years, I can’t thank you enough for your support. Hampshire will always be my home,” he added.

Notably, Liam Dawson also represented England in four Test matches against India and South Africa during his red-ball career. Among Hampshire batters in the 21st century, only Robin Smith, Jimmy Adams and James Vince scored more runs than the experienced all-rounder. Although he retired from first-class cricket, he will continue playing white-ball cricket for Hampshire after signing a new three-year contract in 2025. Dawson is expected to return to action at the Utilita Bowl during Hampshire’s opening T20 match of the season on May 22.
