Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur said the Women’s Premier League and her journey with Mumbai Indians played a key role in building her leadership mindset.
Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur explained how the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and her time with the Mumbai Indians (MI) have played a major role in shaping her mindset as a leader. The 36-year-old created history last year by becoming the first Indian captain to win the Women’s ODI World Cup.
Harmanpreet has been part of the WPL since its launch in 2023 and has enjoyed remarkable success with Mumbai Indians. She has led MI to two WPL titles so far, winning the trophy in 2023 and again in 2025.
Speaking during a press conference, Harmanpreet highlighted the competitive nature of the league and its impact on players. “The WPL has given us a different kind of exposure. When you play in an environment where every game matters and every team is competitive, it automatically builds a winning mindset. Mumbai Indians, in particular, have always focused on excellence, and that rubs off on you as a player and as a leader,” Harmanpreet said.
The Indian skipper also spoke about her strong connection with the city of Mumbai and how it has positively influenced her career. “Mumbai feels special to me. The energy of the city and the support you get here makes a big difference. It’s a place where I’ve always felt comfortable, and that helps you express yourself freely on the field,” Harmanpreet said.
Harmanpreet Kaur Praises MI-W Atmosphere
Harmanpreet further praised the atmosphere within the MI camp, stressing the importance of support from the management and coaching staff. “What stands out for me is the family atmosphere. When players feel supported by the management and coaching staff, they play without fear. That trust and backing is crucial, especially in high-pressure tournaments like the WPL,” the Punjab-born stated.
Meanwhile, former India cricketer Saba Karim believes opposition teams will closely watch the Richa Ghosh–De Klerk pairing in the upcoming season. “Opposition bowlers will fear them,” Karim said while assessing the duo ahead of WPL 2026.
