India created history by becoming the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles after defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the 2026 final in Ahmedabad.
India secured the T20 World Cup 2026 title with a massive 96-run win over New Zealand in Ahmedabad. The final took place at Narendra Modi Stadium. The win delivered India their 3rd T20 World Cup trophy. The team was also the first to achieve back-to-back titles.
Earlier, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to field in the T20 World Cup 2026 final. India responded with aggressive batting and posted 255/5. The total is the third-highest in T20 World Cup history.
Sanju Samson led the innings with 89. Abhishek Sharma provided strong support and scored 52 from 18 balls. The opening pair powered India to 92 runs during the Powerplay. India also crossed 100 inside 8 overs.

Ishan Kishan added another quick contribution with 50 from 23 balls. He shared a century stand with Samson. India reached 150 in the 12th over and later crossed 200 with 5 overs remaining.
For NZ, Jimmy Neesham struck with 3 wickets in one over, removing Samson, Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav for 0. Shivam Dube finished strongly by scoring 24 runs in the final over.
In response, New Zealand faced a difficult chase from the start. The innings lost momentum quickly after early wickets. Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, and Glenn Phillips fell soon and New Zealand slipped to 47 for 3. Axar Patel removed Allen with a catch taken at long-on. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Ravindra soon after. Ishan Kishan completed a diving catch during that wicket. Axar Patel then bowled Glenn Phillips.
Tim Seifert offered some resistance for New Zealand. The batter struck 52 with 5 sixes and 2 fours. Varun Chakaravarthy later dismissed Seifert. The wicket became his 14th of the tournament.
Mitchell Santner and Daryl Mitchell attempted to rebuild the innings. The pair added 52 runs in 28 balls. However, the target continued to climb quickly. Bumarh first removed Matt Henry for 0, leaving New Zealand eight wickets down. He then dismissed James Neesham for 8. Soon after, he struck again by bowling New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner for 43. The wicket gave Bumrah his fourth scalp of the innings. His figures improved to 4 for 14 during the spell.
Abhishek Sharma eventually claimed the final wicket. Tilak Varma completed the catch at long-on. India finished the match with a 96-run win to lift the trophy on home soil.
