Kane Williamson Breaks Silence On Test Retirement News After West Indies Series

The New Zealand batting great Kane Williamson admits retirement thoughts are on his mind as he balances cricket with family life.

Cricket fans may witness an emotional farewell when Kane Williamson walks off the field in New Zealand’s ongoing Test against West Indies. The champion batter has admitted he is considering retirement, meaning this could be his final match in the iconic white jersey. As New Zealand’s greatest Test run-scorer, Williamson has an outstanding record of over 9,400 runs.

The 35-year-old is now taking his career one series at a time, with his family becoming his main priority. After this match, he will take a long break from international cricket to play in a South African league, with his next possible Test appearance months away.

Williamson acknowledged his future is uncertain. “As you get to the latter stages (of your career) those thoughts certainly enter your mind,” said the 35-year-old.

He explained his current approach is flexible. “It’s almost series by series,” Williamson said of his commitment to the Black Caps. He added, “We’ll just cross those bridges as they come.”

While tours to England and Australia in 2026 are tempting prospects, Williamson is clear that personal milestones like reaching 10,000 Test runs do not motivate him. “I’ve never used this team for my own personal gain. I know cricket’s saturated in stats, but you’re wanting to go out and contribute to a team that you care about, so whatever runs you get aren’t really yours, they’re for the team,” Williamson said.
