KL Rahul opined Ruturaj Gaikwad has the skill to succeed in ODIs but has played fewer games because India’s top order has remained settled and injury-free.
KL Rahul praised Ruturaj Gaikwad’s ability ahead of the three-match ODI series in South Africa, noting that the opener has shown strong technique despite limited chances in the format. Since debuting in 2022, Gaikwad has played only six ODIs, largely because India’s top order has remained settled and productive.
Rahul said injuries in the squad have now opened a pathway for Gaikwad to stake his claim. The right-hander enters the series in excellent form after scoring 210 runs in three List A games for India A against South Africa.
“Rutu is obviously a top-class player. We’ve all seen that whatever limited opportunities he has received, he has utilised them well and shown what he can do. Unfortunately, in ODIs, the top five or six is quite settled and performing well, so you feel bad for players who don’t get enough chances. But at the same time, you’re happy that the playing group is doing well,” Rahul said in press-conference before the first ODI.
“It’s unfortunate for those missing out, but with a few injuries, he now has an opportunity. He will get his chance at some stage. We’re looking forward to giving him that opportunity and letting him show what he can do. There’s never been a question about his skill — it’s only about the right opportunity and timing. Hopefully, this series gives him that chance,” he added.
Rishabh Pant Viewed as a Batting Option Despite Long ODI Gap
Rahul, who has regularly taken the wicketkeeping role in ODIs, also noted that Rishabh Pant has the ability to feature purely as a batter if required. Pant has not played a 50-over match since August 2024 after missing significant cricket due to his car accident and the recovery period that followed.
The team management has not confirmed whether Pant will return to the XI in Ranchi, but Rahul admitted that the left-hander remains a strong contender for a specialist batting position.

“Rishabh [Pant] obviously missed out due to injury, and again, he is someone who has been with the team for a long time. Everyone has seen what he brings and what he can do for the team. Like I answered them earlier, the players who are already in the team and have been performing – sometimes you just have to wait for your opportunity,” Rahul said.
“You’ll get to know tomorrow [on Sunday] who will play – whether it’s me or him behind the stumps – but obviously, he is good enough to play as a specialist batter as well. But if he is in the eleven, then obviously he will take the gloves, and I will be the fielder,” he concluded.
The first ODI takes place on November 30 at the JSCA Stadium.
