In a major development for New Zealand women’s cricket, legendary fast bowler Lea Tahuhu has officially announced her retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. The decision was confirmed by New Zealand Cricket through an official statement released on Sunday morning.

Tahuhu’s announcement comes while the New Zealand women’s national cricket team are hosting Zimbabwe women’s national cricket team in a multi-format series at home. The hosts dominated the T20I leg with a clean 3-0 sweep before continuing their strong form in the ODI series.

New Zealand sealed an unassailable lead in the three-match ODI series after defeating Zimbabwe by eight wickets in the second match, which took place in Dunedin.

Lea Tahuhu Announces Retirement From ODI Cricket

Following the convincing victory over Zimbabwe Women, Tahuhu confirmed that she would step away from the 50-over format, bringing an end to an impressive international journey.

Widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest fast bowlers, Tahuhu leaves the ODI arena after representing her country with distinction for more than a decade. The announcement was formally shared by New Zealand Cricket in an official release.

“It’s always been a privilege and honour to pull on the WHITE FERNS shirt in ODI cricket. To get one game was an amazing feeling. To have been able to wear the shirt and represent my country and my family over 100 times in ODI cricket is something I never could have dreamt of,” Lea Tahuhu said.

“I’ll treasure every moment and walk away from the ODI game incredibly proud of what I’ve been able to achieve in the format,” she added.

A Look At Lea Tahuhu’s ODI Journey

Tahuhu made her ODI debut in 2011 against Australia women’s national cricket team in Brisbane on June 14. Over the next 15 years, she established herself as a key figure in New Zealand’s bowling attack with her pace and ability to extract movement off the pitch.

The right-arm fast bowler went on to play 103 ODI matches for the White Ferns, finishing with 125 wickets. She maintained an impressive bowling average of 28.01 and a strike rate of 37, while conceding runs at an economy rate of 4.54.

Her consistency and match-winning spells helped New Zealand secure several important victories over the years.

Record-Breaking Numbers And World Cup Appearances

Statistically, Tahuhu stands as New Zealand’s most successful wicket-taker in Women’s ODIs. She currently leads the country’s bowling charts in the format, with Amelia Kerr next on the list with 117 wickets.

During her ODI career, Tahuhu produced multiple memorable performances, including three four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul across her 103 appearances.

The experienced pacer also ranks among New Zealand’s most capped ODI players, joining an elite group of twelve cricketers from the country who have played over 100 matches in the format.

Tahuhu was part of four editions of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, including the 2022 tournament hosted in New Zealand. Her final appearance in the global event came at the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, where she claimed 10 wickets in six matches while maintaining an excellent economy rate of 4.62.
