Meg Lanning has been appointed captain of UP Warriorz for the 2026 Women’s Premier League. The tournament will run from January 9 to February 5, with matches scheduled in Navi Mumbai and Vadodara. The franchise confirmed the leadership change through an official social media announcement on Sunday.

Lanning takes over the role ahead of Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma. The 33-year-old previously represented Delhi Capitals and guided them to three consecutive WPL finals across the first three seasons. Delhi released her before the 2026 mega auction. UP Warriorz secured her signing at the auction held in Delhi on November 27, 2025, for INR 1.90 crore.

Notably, Lanning ranks among the league’s most consistent batters. She has scored 952 runs in 27 WPL matches, placing third overall. Only Nat Sciver-Brunt and Ellyse Perry sit above her. Across T20 cricket, Lanning has amassed 8,460 runs from 286 matches.

UP Warriorz open their campaign on January 10 in Navi Mumbai against Gujarat Giants. They face Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 12. League fixtures continue against Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Giants, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The final league match is scheduled for February 1 in Vadodara against Delhi Capitals.
