Mitchell Marsh Confirms He Will Captain Australia at 2026 T20 World Cup

Mitchell Marsh confirmed he will captain Australia at the T20 World Cup, while Pat Cummins will continue to lead the Test and ODI teams.

Australia’s T20I skipper Mitchell Marsh has confirmed that Pat Cummins will not lead the team at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India. Marsh will continue as captain in the shortest format for Australia, while Cummins remains in charge of the Test and ODI sides.

The announcement came after the fifth T20I between India and Australia at the Gabba was abandoned due to heavy rain, sealing a 2-1 series win for India. India had raced to 52 for no loss in 4.5 overs before play was called off.

Despite the series defeat, Marsh praised the team’s adaptability and depth ahead of the World Cup. He expressed confidence in Australia’s full-strength squad and emphasized the value of the Big Bash League in preparing players for next year’s global tournament.

“Can’t remember the last time we played and had so many rain interruptions. All in all a great series. India obviously won the games when it mattered, congratulations to them. There’s a lot of learnings and positives to take forward. The adaptability and flexibility in our group and the squad we’re trying to build in a World Cup year has been amazing. Guys have come in, done really well, played their roles, that’s all we can ask for,” Marsh said at the post-match interview.

“Our squad, at full strength, is a pretty settled team. The Big Bash is there for the guys to enjoy and hopefully the Scorchers win. Good question (who will captain in the T20 World Cup – him or Pat). I think I’ll be there,” he added.
