
Mithali Raj got emotional as she hugged the World Cup trophy and celebrated India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup win with Harmanpreet Kaur’s team.
In 2017, Mithali Raj’s Indian team came close to winning the World Cup but fell short by nine runs against England. Eight years later, the long wait ended as Harmanpreet Kaur’s side scripted history by defeating South Africa by 52 runs to claim India’s maiden ICC Women’s World Cup title.
The night turned emotional at DY Patil Stadium as the players celebrated with former legends Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra. A viral video captured a teary Mithali holding the trophy with pride and lifting it high amid cheers from the young champions.

In the match, defending 299, India dismissed South Africa for 246 in 45.3 overs. Deepti Sharma produced a match-winning spell, taking five wickets to crush South Africa’s chase. Laura Wolvaardt fought hard with a valiant 101, but the lack of support at the other end hurt her side’s chances. Shafali Verma’s timely wickets of Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp tilted the match in India’s favour.

Earlier, India set a strong total of 298/7 after being put in to bat. Shafali top-scored with 87 off 78 balls, while Deepti remained unbeaten on 58 from 58 deliveries. Smriti Mandhana added 45 off 58, providing the early momentum. Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur chipped in with 24 and 20 respectively. Richa Ghosh’s quickfire 34 off 24 balls lifted India to a strong total.
