The Election Commission of India had summoned Mohammed Shami over discrepancies in electoral forms, but the pacer sought a deferment citing his ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy participation.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has summoned Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and his brother, Mohammed Kaif, as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls that began on December 16, 2025.
The summons was issued after discrepancies were found in the enumeration forms of both Shami and his brother. However, the senior India pacer informed the poll body that he would not be able to attend the scheduled hearing as he is currently in Rajkot for the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
In a letter addressed to the Election Commission, Shami explained his absence and requested a rescheduling of the hearing.
“I am writing with reference to the notice received regarding my appearance before your office on 05 January 2026 in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Electoral Roll. I would like to respectfully inform you that due to my current participation in domestic cricket matches, wherein I am officially representing the Bengal State Team, I shall be unable to attend the scheduled hearing on the mentioned date and time,” Shami wrote in his letter to the EC.

According to Election Commission sources quoted by India Today, the names of Shami and his brother appeared on the hearing list due to complications in their enumeration forms. The issues reportedly relate to discrepancies in progeny mapping and self-mapping.
Notices were issued on Monday from Kartju Nagar School in the Jadavpur area of south Kolkata, directing both to appear before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO). While Shami’s hearing was initially fixed for January 5, it has now been postponed to a date between January 9 and 11 following his communication with the ECI.
Shami is registered as a voter in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Ward No. 93, which comes under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency. Although he was born in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, the fast bowler has been a permanent resident of Kolkata for several years.
