Mohammed Shami’s omission from India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand series has started a debate over his future, with Irfan Pathan questioning the decision.
India pacer Mohammed Shami’s omission from India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand series has drawn wide attention. The senior fast bowler missed selection despite strong domestic form and full fitness. India picked five younger seam bowling options.
Notably, Shami has stayed away from international cricket for 10 months. Selectors appear to have shifted focus to other options after his long layoff.
The decision has triggered debate among former players and analysts. Former India seamer Irfan Pathan discussed the issue on his YouTube channel. Pathan highlighted Shami’s vast experience and career tally of 450–500 international wickets.
“The biggest talking point is Mohammed Shami. What is his future? He’s not someone who came yesterday, played a few matches and left. He has taken 450-500 international wickets, which is a huge number,” he argued.
“If you have taken more than 400 wickets and then you get dropped and questions are raised about your fitness, that happens with everyone. As long as you play cricket, you have to keep proving yourself. But Shami has already bowled 200 overs. After bowling 200 overs, if fitness is the question, then fitness has already been shown. What more improvement is needed? Only the selection committee knows what they are thinking,” Pathan added.
In the new squad, the attack is led by Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, alongside Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Pathan Backs Strong IPL Performances
The upcoming IPL could play a decisive role in Shami’s international future. Pathan believes the IPL offers Shami the best route back. Shami will represent Lucknow Super Giants in the upcoming season.
“If I were him, I would go and play the IPL and create havoc. I would take the new ball and perform at such a level. Domestic cricket performances are discussed, but when the IPL comes and you show your old rhythm and fitness, then no one can ignore you,” Pathan said.

“The whole world watches the IPL. If you perform there, you make your place in the squad again. I believe his doors should not be closed,” he concluded.
