Ravi Shastri named Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, and Kapil Dev as his top five Indian ODI players of all time, leaving out Jasprit Bumrah.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri named his top five ODI players of all time during the second ODI between India and Australia in Adelaide. Shastri’s list features Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, and Kapil Dev. He praised their consistency, longevity, and ability to win matches across eras.
Sachin Tendulkar leads ODI history with 18,426 runs, followed by Virat Kohli’s 14,000-plus and 51 centuries. Kapil Dev redefined Indian cricket, while MS Dhoni’s leadership guided India to the 2011 World Cup title. Rohit Sharma’s three double hundreds and 11,000-plus runs cement his place among modern-day ODI greats.
Having played under Kapil Dev in the 1983 World Cup and later coached Kohli, Dhoni, and Rohit, Shastri highlighted their impact on Indian cricket. He also shared his long-standing bond with Tendulkar through commentary and mentorship. However, Shastri excluded Jasprit Bumrah from the list, stating that the pacer still has several years left to build his ODI legacy.
“Yeah, I’ll go with Kohli, Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma. You know, these players, you know, more or less coming to the fag end of their careers. They played for over a decade, some for over a decade and a half. You know, so I would put, and it’s tough to pick. There are so many other good players there, you know, when you look back. But these stand out for me,” Shastri said.
“And the only reason I’ve not put Bumrah there, that Bumrah has got another three, four years of cricket left,” he added.
