India head coach Gautam Gambhir continues to face criticism after the team’s batting collapse in the Kolkata Test, but former teammate Robin Uthappa has strongly defended him. The defeat, which saw India dismissed for 93 while chasing 124, marked their fourth home loss in six Tests under Gambhir.
Uthappa argued that the backlash is misplaced, stressing that the coach has no control once the players step onto the field. He added that impatience, rather than logic, is driving much of the reaction. Uthappa also pointed out that even Rahul Dravid once faced similar trolling.
“I saw a comment yesterday suggesting that I was defending GG. Yaar, coach thodi jaake khel raha hai andar (The coach is not playing out there),” Uthappa said.
“When they criticised Rahul Dravid, it didn’t make sense to me. Scoring 20-30 thousand international runs is not easy. So if he can be trolled, anyone can be trolled,” he added.

Notably, India have struggled in Tests under Gautam Gambhir, losing 9 of 18 matches, including a 0–3 home defeat to New Zealand and a series loss in Australia. Their 2–2 draw in England under new captain Shubman Gill offered improvement, though many felt India missed a chance against a weakened side.
