Rohit Sharma Confirms 2027 ODI World Cup Ambition: I Really Want That Trophy

Rohit Sharma confirmed his intent to play the 2027 ODI World Cup and said he is determined to win the trophy after India’s 2023 final loss.

Uncertainty surrounded Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The selectors had not issued a formal statement. On Wednesday, Rohit ended the speculation. He confirmed his intention to play the 50-over World Cup in 2027 and made his goal clear. He wants to win it.

“I definitely want to go out there and win the World Cup for my country; that is something that I’ve always looked upon. I’ve grown up watching this 50-over World Cup. There was no T20 World Cup, no IPL back then, and that was the pinnacle of cricket, which used to happen every four years. So, there was desperation; there was so much weight for that one trophy. And yeah, I really want that trophy, so I’m going to try and do everything in my power and capacity to work hard and get it,” Rohit said in an ICC event.

Both senior batters stepped away from T20Is and Tests. They now focus only on ODIs. Some questioned whether they could stay fit until 2027. Limited fixtures added to the doubt. Last year, both answered strongly with their performances.

After a seven-month break, they returned in October. India played three ODI series against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Kohli scored 616 runs in nine innings at 88. He struck three centuries and three fifties. Rohit made 409 runs in nine innings at 51.12. He hit three fifties and one century.

Both also played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Each scored a century in his opening match. They next play in July during India’s tour of England. Before that, both will feature in IPL 2026.
