After nearly losing his place in the tournament, Sanju Samson staged a stunning comeback to power India’s win as he now reflects on his journey.
Sanju Samson’s journey in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 turned out to be one of the most inspiring stories of the tournament. After initially losing his place in the playing XI following a poor run of form, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter made a sensational comeback and eventually became one of the key contributors to India national cricket team’s title-winning campaign.
From being dropped early in the tournament to delivering match-winning knocks in the knockout stages, Samson’s journey highlighted resilience, belief, and the unpredictable nature of sport.
Samson Credits Faith and Support Behind His Comeback
Reflecting on his extraordinary campaign in a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Samson admitted that he had nearly given up hope after the New Zealand series earlier in the year.
“Unbelievable, I think, I said before I knew that I have it in me to do it. I had the dream to achieve this, but I didn’t know it would happen so exactly in this current moment,” Samson said.
“So very grateful. I absolutely don’t have words for it, to be very honest. I know, I think genuine prayers and genuine wishes are very powerful. And when it is given by such huge crowd, I think I can’t ask for more.”
“I think they definitely genuinely wish and pray for me. I think that is much, much bigger than anything for me in this life. I want to thank each and every one of you out there who has wished for me, who has prayed for me. Thank you so much, this means the world for me,” he added.

Samson also spoke about how unpredictable sport can be and how the path to achieving a dream is often impossible to plan.
“You definitely can have a dream. You can definitely think that is what you want to achieve, but you can’t plan the way to reach there. That only one person can do.”
“I actually lost it. I think I left it a bit alone after the New Zealand series. I thought my dream is broken. I actually wanted to do this, wanted to be the man for India in this World Cup, but after New Zealand series I thought that I didn’t utilise my opportunity and the dream is broken. But I think the world and God’s grace, things turned around and I’m very happy that what has happened here,” he added.
