Shreyas Iyer has been named Mumbai captain for the remainder of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26 after Shardul Thakur was ruled out with injury.
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed Mumbai captain for the remainder of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26 league stage. The leadership change follows regular skipper Shardul Thakur’s exit due to a calf injury suffered in a heavy loss to Maharashtra.
The Mumbai Cricket Association opted for Iyer as Mumbai pushes for qualification. The side sits second in Elite Group C with 16 points from 5 matches, though a 128-run defeat hurt the net run rate. Matches against Himachal Pradesh and Punjab remain, with at least 1 win needed to reach the knockouts.
Iyer has completed rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence and cleared recent match simulations. His appearances will assess readiness for a full 100-over workload. Earlier, Shreyas Iyer was also named India’s vice-captain for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube have joined Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy camp in Jaipur. Sarfaraz Khan is set to return after missing the last match with quadriceps discomfort. Sarfaraz leads Mumbai’s batting with 220 runs from 3 games at an average of 110. A steady domestic run could see Iyer return to international action after October.
