Kris Srikkanth: Shubman Gill’s Body Language Shows Pressure of Replacing Rohit as Captain

Shubman Gill

Krishnamachari Srikkanth feels Shubman Gill looks under pressure after a poor ODI series in Australia, saying the young captain needs big scores against South Africa to regain confidence.

Former India selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes Shubman Gill is showing signs of pressure after a tough start to his full-time ODI captaincy. Gill scored 10, 9, and 24 in the three-match series in Australia, while Rohit Sharma piled up over 200 runs, including a century, to claim the Player of the Series award.

Srikkanth observed that leading the side, replacing Rohit as captain, and keeping Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the XI may be weighing on Gill. He believes a few strong innings in the upcoming South Africa series could help Gill regain confidence and return to his natural game.

“After performing in England, probably he is also putting pressure on himself. He shouldn’t do that and just play his game. He actually played well today but just got a superb delivery from Hazlewood. More than Shubman Gill getting himself out, it was a wicket-taking delivery that got him. But he does look to be under pressure, just observing his body language because he has replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain, while also opening alongside him,” he said.

“And on the other side, everyone is asking why Yashasvi Jaiswal isn’t playing. All that adds to his pressure. But he’ll get over it as he’s a fantastic player. He should just play his normal game because he’s getting his strides and shots right. He’s just getting out, that’s the only thing. So once he produces a couple of big knocks at home against South Africa, he’ll be set again,” Srikkanth added.

White-Ball Struggles Persist for Shubman Gill

Notably, Shubman Gill has enjoyed an outstanding run in red-ball cricket but has struggled to replicate that success in limited-overs formats. The opener finished as the leading scorer on India’s five-Test tour of England, amassing 754 runs in 10 innings. He also struck a fifty and a century in two of his three innings against West Indies earlier this month.

However, his white-ball form has dipped sharply. Gill managed only 127 runs in seven matches during India’s Asia Cup 2025 and added just 43 runs in the three-match ODI series against Australia that concluded recently. This was his third series since 2023 without a fifty-plus score.
