Indian captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the ongoing first Test against South Africa at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens after suffering a neck injury during the second day’s play. The incident occurred when Gill came out to bat following Washington Sundar’s dismissal.
The right-handed batter faced just three deliveries in his innings, scoring four runs including one boundary. He experienced neck cramping while playing a sweep shot against spinner Simon Harmer. Gill displayed visible discomfort as he left the field, with deputy captain Rishabh Pant taking over leadership responsibilities.

Medical Monitoring Underway
The Board of Control for Cricket in India issued an official statement regarding the captain’s condition. Gill was taken to the hospital for examination after the day’s play concluded.
“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” the BCCI statement read.
Gill now has a six-day recovery window before the second Test begins on November 22 in Guwahati. His availability for that match will depend on his recovery progress.

Meanwhile, India maintains control of the current Test match. South Africa were dismissed for 159 on the first day. India responded with 189 runs in their first innings, with KL Rahul top-scoring at 39. As Day 3 begins, South Africa holds a 63-run lead with Corbin Bosch and Temba Bavuma at the crease.
