Australia were set to appoint Sophie Molineux as their new all-format captain following Alyssa Healy’s decision to retire from international cricket.
Australia are preparing to name a new all-format captain following Alyssa Healy’s announcement that she will retire from international cricket. According to a report by 7Cricket, Sophie Molineux is expected to take over the leadership role across formats.
Earlier this month, Healy confirmed that the upcoming home series against India in February–March will be her final appearance in international cricket. She has decided to skip the T20I leg of the series, stating that the team needs time to groom a new leader ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year.

Molineux has been leading the Melbourne Renegades since 2021 and guided the franchise to the title in the 2024–25 season. Her likely appointment has come as a surprise, especially with vice-captain Tahlia McGrath not being handed the role after Healy’s departure. However, McGrath’s recent lack of form is believed to be a key factor behind the decision.
Healy’s Decision To Retire
Healy had taken over Australia’s captaincy from former skipper Meg Lanning. Explaining her decision to retire, Healy opened up on the Willow Talk podcast. “It’s been a long time coming.”
“The last few years has been probably more mentally draining than anything else. A few injuries. I’ve got to dive into the well, and the well is getting less and less full of water. Getting harder to dive back in there.
“I’ve always felt like I’ve had a competitive edge in that I want to compete, I want to win and I want to challenge myself on the park. I’ve felt as I’ve got a little bit older, I’ve not necessarily lost all of it, but I’ve lost some of that.
“I think the WBBL [last year] was probably a bit of a wake-up call. Not being able to hold the bat with two hands didn’t help either, but waking up and going, ‘just another day of cricket’, really surprised myself because I still thought I loved playing the game,” Healy concluded.
With Healy stepping aside and Molineux expected to take charge, Australia now appear focused on ensuring leadership continuity as they build towards major tournaments later this year.
