Steve Smith Ruled Out Of Adelaide Test As Usman Khawaja Returns To XI

Steve Smith was ruled out of the Adelaide Test just before the start due to dizziness, leading to Usman Khawaja being recalled to the Australia XI.

Steve Smith was ruled out of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide on match morning after experiencing ongoing vertigo-like symptoms. This has prompted a late change to Australia’s playing XI. Cricket Australia confirmed the senior batter had been dealing with dizziness and nausea for several days. Although he completed a pre-match fitness check, medical staff advised against his taking the field due to the persistence of symptoms.

This has opened the door for Usman Khawaja, who earned a recall at the final moment. Australia also adjusted their batting order, with Khawaja set to bat at number 4. Pat Cummins returned to captain the side after missing the first two Tests.

“Steve’s been feeling a bit unwell the last couple of days. He came and gave it a crack this morning, but didn’t think he was going get up for this one. So he’s headed off home. Pretty lucky we’ve got someone like Usman who can step right in. Usman will be at number 4,” Cummins said at the toss.

Cricket Australia described Smith’s condition as a possible vestibular issue linked to balance, a concern he has managed intermittently in the past. Smith had missed training on Monday, returned to the nets on Tuesday, and appeared short of focus. He also suffered a hit to the groin during that session.
