BCCI Officially Rules Out Tilak Varma From First Three NZ T20I Matches

Tilak Varma has been officially ruled out of the first three T20I matches against New Zealand, given his surgery and recovery timeline.

In a significant setback for the Indian cricket team, Tilak Varma has been officially ruled out of the upcoming New Zealand T20I series. Tilak Varma underwent emergency surgery for an abdominal issue in Rajkot on January 7, 2026.

The procedure addressed severe pain that emerged following his participation in a domestic match for Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

According to official statements, Varma was discharged from the hospital the next morning and is set to return to his home in Hyderabad on January 9.

Tilak Varma Requires Time To Heal

As per BCCI report, medical updates indicate he is stable and making good progress in his recovery. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Varma will gradually resume physical training and skill-based activities only after his symptoms fully subside and wound healing is deemed satisfactory.

As a direct result, Tilak Varma has been ruled out of the first three T20 Internationals (T20Is) against New Zealand. His participation in the remaining two matches will depend on his rehabilitation progress.

Further details from medical reports reveal that the surgery was for testicular torsion, a condition causing intense abdominal pain due to twisted blood flow in the testes. This rare but serious issue required immediate intervention to prevent complications.

His coach from Hyderabad, DB Ravi Teja, described the procedure as minor, suggesting a potential recovery in just 3-4 days, though broader estimates point to 3-4 weeks of rest.

Tilak Varma’s Meteoric Rise

Tilak Varma has been a rising star in India’s T20 setup, amassing 1,183 runs in 37 innings at an impressive average of 49.29. He earned acclaim as the hero of the 2025 Asia Cup final, where his match-winning knock helped secure the title for India.

Varma’s explosive middle-order batting and ability to accelerate innings make him a key asset, especially with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 looming in February.
