BCCI Breaks Silence on Virat Kohli–Gautam Gambhir Rift Rumours

The Board of Control for Cricket in India denied reports of a rift between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, stating their relationship remains cordial.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) addressed speculation around the working relationship between head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said there has been no friction within the group. He explained that rumours grew after Kohli and Rohit stepped away from Tests last year, and later decisions reshaped the ODI setup.

The board reiterated that selections follow a merit-based approach, including expectations around domestic cricket. Some comments made by the coach after an ODI series loss also drew attention, adding to speculation.

Saikia stated that he has not witnessed any discord and described their relationship as professional and healthy. Speaking on the India Today Podcast, he also downplayed references to a past Indian Premier League incident.

“I have never seen them fighting. They are in a very good cordial relationship. I haven’t seen it. IPL? Maybe I didn’t see that match because I was with them when they were representing the country… Watching every match is not possible,” Saikia said.

Saikia also dismissed suggestions that Virat Kohli wanted Gautam Gambhir removed, or the other way around. Saikia pointed out that both Kohli and Gambhir continue to be part of the team environment.

“That perception might be there, but Virat Kohli is always in the team. Gautam Gambhir is also there. We see the results. Have you seen Virat Kohli not being a part of the team?” he said.

“Nobody can force a player of the stature of Virat Kohli to change and make a decision. He is at that level. He is not an ordinary player; he is a legend in Indian cricket. Nobody can force him to make a decision unless he chooses to. The board will not interfere in any player’s career,” Saikia concluded.
