Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might never get to play overseas leagues like BBL, IPL chair explained the reason.
The Indian Premier League stands alone in the cricket world as the only franchise tournament where active Indian cricket superstars can be seen.
While top players from other nations travel the globe for various T20 leagues, India’s current stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are restricted to the IPL. BCCI rules keep active Indian players exclusive to the IPL, with workload management cited as the key reason.
Workload Management is the Deciding Factor
IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal dismissed the idea of Indian players joining overseas leagues soon. He explained that the national calendar and domestic commitments leave no room.
“You look at the workload our players have. The BCCI has made a rule for the international players that they must play domestic cricket as well,” Dhumal told journalist Vimal Kumar.
“They have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well. When there is so much cricket in India, and there are so many takers and fans in the country, I don’t think there can be the opportunity (to play in overseas leagues),” Dhumal said.

He emphasized that it is especially challenging for leading players who represent India in multiple formats.
“At the moment, there is no chance for the big players. How can they go? Some players are even playing in three formats. Workload management!” Dhumal stated.
“Some bowlers, we have to give them rest after two Tests, we have to rest them in ODIs and T20Is. Now if you tell them to go abroad and play leagues, I think that would hurt the national team too,” he added.
Dhumal’s point is illustrated by the careful management of pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is often rested from important matches to manage his fitness.
