Wasim Khan To Step Down As ICC General Manager Cricket After Four Years Of Service

Wasim Khan will step down as ICC General Manager Cricket in June, ending a four-year tenure marked by key structural changes and scheduling challenges.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set for another major administrative change, as Wasim Khan will step down from his role as general manager of cricket after completing four years in the position. Wasim, who took charge in May 2022, had replaced Geoff Allardice following the latter’s elevation to the CEO role within the ICC setup.

Having previously served as the CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for nearly three years, Wasim brought extensive administrative experience to the global governing body. His tenure will officially conclude at the end of June, and he is expected to take up a new role starting July.

From County Cricketer To Global Cricket Administrator

Before establishing himself as a respected cricket administrator, Wasim Khan had a notable playing career in England. He holds the distinction of being the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket, representing Warwickshire during the mid-to-late 1990s.

A left-handed batter, Wasim featured in 58 first-class matches and 30 List A games across stints with Warwickshire, Sussex, and Derbyshire. One of the highlights of his playing days came in 1995 when he played a key role in Warwickshire’s County Championship-winning campaign, averaging close to 50 that season.

Post-retirement, Wasim transitioned into administration, serving as CEO of Leicestershire County Cricket Club and earlier at the Cricket Foundation, where he played a crucial role in transforming the ‘Chance to Shine’ initiative into a leading national cricket charity in the United Kingdom.

Key Challenges And Structural Changes During Tenure

During his time at the ICC, Wasim Khan navigated several significant challenges, most notably the increasingly congested cricket calendar. The rapid rise of franchise-based T20 and T10 leagues posed a serious challenge to the scheduling and relevance of international cricket.

Despite these pressures, the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the 2023–27 cycle, finalised during his tenure, saw an increase in international fixtures. Additionally, a landmark development came with the introduction of the first-ever women’s FTP, marking a progressive step in global cricket structure.

Wasim’s departure comes amid a series of high-profile exits within the ICC in recent years. Geoff Allardice has since been replaced as CEO by Sanjog Gupta, while Chris Tetley (head of events) and Alex Marshall (head of the anti-corruption unit) have also moved on, with Gaurav Saxena and Andrew Ephgrave stepping into those respective roles.
