Australia Women Announce T20 World Cup 2026 Squad; Fit Sophie Molineux To Lead

Australia captain Sophie Molineux has recovered from injury and will lead the six-time champions in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in England.

Sophie Molineux has been officially declared fit and named captain of Australia women’s national cricket team’ 15-member squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The 28-year-old all-rounder will head the squad with support from vice-captains Ash Gardner and Tahlia McGrath as Australia aim to reclaim the title after their semi-final exit in the 2024 edition.

Lucy Hamilton Earns Maiden ICC Tournament Call-Up

Australia also handed a maiden ICC tournament selection to left-arm pacer Lucy Hamilton, who has been included as part of the bowling attack for the England conditions.

Meanwhile, all-rounders Annabel Sutherland and Grace Harris returned to the squad after missing the West Indies tour in March due to rest and selection decisions respectively.

Molineux was appointed Australia captain earlier this year following the retirement of Alyssa Healy. Her appointment initially surprised many due to her long history with injuries.

The Australian skipper had suffered a back injury ahead of the Caribbean tour and featured only as a batter during the series. National selector Shawn Flegler had earlier stated that Molineux would not have been considered for the World Cup solely as a non-bowling option.

Speaking after the squad announcement, Flegler backed Molineux’s leadership ahead of the major ICC tournament.

“Sophie has already made her mark as captain and built a strong connection with the group over the last couple of tours, so we’re looking forward to seeing what this side can achieve under her leadership. Darcie Brown was unlucky to miss out but the decision was based on the conditions we’re expecting and the make-up of the side,” Flegler said.

“With at least six right-arm pace options in the mix and raw pace expected to be less effective, we opted to go with Lucy Hamilton who offers something different as a left-arm quick.”

Australia are scheduled to play warm-up matches against South Africa women’s national cricket team, England women’s national cricket team, and West Indies women’s national cricket team before beginning their T20 World Cup campaign against South Africa on June 13 at Old Trafford.
