BCCI Denies Reports of Gautam Gambhir Being Sacked as Head Coach

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed reports of Gautam Gambhir being removed as India head coach, calling the claims false and confirming he will continue in the role.

Board of Control for Cricket(BCCI) in India has firmly rejected reports suggesting that Gautam Gambhir is set to be removed as head coach of the Indian team. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that the claims circulating in the media have no factual basis. Recent reports linked Gambhir’s future to India’s struggles in Test cricket, including defeats away from home and series losses against South Africa and New Zealand.

Some reports also claimed that Gambhir would remain in charge of white-ball teams only, with a separate coach appointed for Tests. VVS Laxman was mentioned as a possible option, but he has consistently ruled himself out.

Saikia stressed that the board has taken no such decision and dismissed the reports as speculative. Gambhir is expected to continue in his role for the upcoming New Zealand series and the T20 World Cup 2026.

“This is totally incorrect news going on. This is totally speculative news. Some very reputed news agencies are also flashing the news. There is no truth to it. BCCI straight away denies. People can think all they want, but BCCI has not taken any steps. This is somebody’s figment of imagination; there is no truth in it, and I cannot say anything except that this is factually incorrect and baseless news,” said Saikia as quoted by Times Now.

India Squad Likely to Be Announced by January 4

India cricket team is set to announce its squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand on or before January 4. The selection meeting will be led by Ajit Agarkar and his panel. Gautam Gambhir will continue as head coach for the series and the T20 World Cup 2026.

Early indications suggest a possible return for Ishan Kishan, who has not featured in ODIs for over two years and could replace Rishabh Pant. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is also in contention after recovering from an injury suffered during the Australia series. The New Zealand ODIs will mark India’s first white-ball assignment of the year.
