Chennai Super Kings (CSK) confirmed plans to enter women’s cricket in the coming years as the BCCI continued discussions on expanding the Women’s Premier League.
After four completed seasons of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially confirmed that the franchise is preparing to step into women’s cricket. One of the most successful teams in Indian cricket, CSK is now looking to expand its footprint, with women’s cricket set to be its top priority.
The confirmation came from CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, who was speaking at the Invest in Tamil Nadu conclave. Viswanathan made it clear that while the move will not happen immediately, the franchise has firm plans to invest in women’s cricket in the near future. He also indicated that CSK could explore opportunities in other sports over time.
“Not immediately, but certainly in the coming years, CSK will expand its footprint. Our first target will be women’s cricket. We may also go into other sports over time,” Viswanathan said when asked about the franchise’s long-term plans.
BCCI plans WPL expansion
The entry of new teams into the WPL has been a topic of discussion among franchise owners in recent months. During the WPL auction, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is actively considering expanding the league.
Jindal explained that the long-term goal is to move away from the current caravan-style format and introduce a full home-and-away structure.
“I think we would love to see the WPL home and away as well. The caravan format is okay, but it is not ideal,” Jindal said during the auction in 2025. “The window is very short right now, which is why the BCCI has to fit the WPL into this period. I hope we get a bigger and longer window going forward.”

He further added that expansion appears unavoidable. “I think it is imminent that one or two new teams will come in at some point. That’s why the cycle is so short, with two WPLs happening over 14 months. I’m pretty sure the BCCI is planning to add a team, and with that, move to a home-and-away format. That would be ideal for fans, the game, and the growth of the WPL,” Jindal concluded.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Premier League 2026 season is nearing its conclusion, with the final scheduled to be played on February 5.
