Fakhar Zaman risks suspension after a ball-tampering charge that proved decisive in Lahore Qalandars’ narrow PSL 2026 defeat to Karachi Kings.
Fakhar Zaman is set to face disciplinary action after being accused of altering the condition of the ball during Lahore Qalandars’ four-wicket loss to Karachi Kings in PSL 2026.
According to the Pakistan Cricket Board, Fakhar has been charged with a Level-III offence, which carries a minimum one-match ban and could extend to two matches for a first offence in the tournament. Match referee Roshan Mahanama is expected to conduct a hearing within the next two days, where the player will contest the charge.
Controversial Final Over Turns the Match
The incident unfolded at the beginning of the final over of Karachi’s chase. On-field umpire Faisal Afridi decided to inspect the ball after it had passed between Shaheen Shah Afridi and Fakhar Zaman. Following a detailed discussion with fellow umpire Sharfuddoula, the officials ruled that the ball had been tampered with and opted to replace it.
As a result, Karachi Kings were awarded five penalty runs, significantly shifting the match situation. Batters Khushdil Shah and Azam Khan were given the option to choose a replacement ball.
This decision was made under clause 41.3 of PSL playing conditions, which allows umpires to “make frequent and irregular inspections of the ball”. The rules further state that “in addition, they shall immediately inspect the ball if they suspect anyone of attempting to change the condition of the ball”.
Additionally, clause 41.3.5.1 allows the “batter at the wicket” to choose from a set of replacement balls, while clause 41.3.5.3 mandates five penalty runs if responsibility for altering the ball can be identified.

Penalty Proves Decisive; Additional Sanction for Hasan Ali
The five-run penalty had a major impact on the outcome, reducing the target from 14 runs off six balls to just nine. Abbas Afridi quickly sealed the game by hitting Haris Rauf for a boundary and a six within the first two legal deliveries of the over.
After the match, Shaheen Afridi expressed uncertainty over the decision, saying: “We’ll see [what the umpires say]”.
In a separate development, Hasan Ali of Karachi Kings was fined 10% of his match fee for his celebration after dismissing Haseebullah in the 19th over. His actions were categorized as a Level-I offence under article 2.5 of the PSL code of conduct, relating to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal”.
