Italy Captain Wayne Madsen Doubtful After Shoulder Injury

Italy captain Wayne Madsen is doubtful for the T20 World Cup league stage after his shoulder injury in the opening match against Scotland.

Italy’s first appearance at the T20 World Cup had an early setback after captain Wayne Madsen suffered a shoulder injury during the opening match against Scotland. The injury has put his availability for the league stage in serious doubt and could affect Italy’s campaign. Team officials confirmed that the shoulder was relocated on the field, but further scans are required to assess the damage.

The coaching staff indicated that a return during the group phase appears unlikely given the nature of the injury. Despite the setback, Madsen may continue travelling with the squad and assist from the dugout in a support role.

Wayne Madsen suffered the injury in the fourth over of Scotland’s innings while diving at mid-wicket to stop a boundary. He landed awkwardly on the hard surface and immediately left the field with his arm supported. Italy later ruled him out, leaving the side one batter short during the chase.

“He dislocated his shoulder. The physio managed to get it back in, but he’ll have to go and get more scans to see how serious it is. I think it’ll be doubtful… I’m not going to say he’s out, but I think it’ll be doubtful if you dislocate your shoulder in cricket. It’s going to be pretty tough to come back from, but we’ll see what the scans say,” Davison said in the post-match media interaction.

“A captain going down like that at the start of the game was a tough one for us. Things weren’t really going our way either,” he added.

In the match, Italy finished on 134 in 16.4 overs while chasing 208. Italy next play Nepal at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, followed by games against England on February 16 and West Indies on February 19.
