Mohammad Nawaz’s Surrey T20 Blast deal collapses as PCB begins investigation into his reported positive test for recreational drug use.
Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz is under investigation after reportedly testing positive for recreational drug use, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo. The development has triggered immediate action from the Pakistan Cricket Board, with the governing body initiating its due process following communication from the International Cricket Council.
“The International Cricket Council has informed the Pakistan Cricket Board about this matter and PCB has begun the due process. The results of this process will be communicated to the ICC today,” a board spokesperson said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.
Recreational drugs, which include substances such as alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, cocaine, heroin, and synthetic compounds, are classified as psychoactive substances used without medical supervision, often for pleasure or relaxation.
Surrey Move Collapses Amid Controversy
The timing of the development has had a direct impact on Nawaz’s professional commitments. The 32-year-old was set to join Surrey for the upcoming T20 Blast, scheduled between May 26 and July 18. The Pakistan board had already granted him a No-Objection Certificate, and an official announcement from Surrey was expected shortly.
However, the report confirms that the deal has now collapsed, effectively ruling Nawaz out of the English domestic tournament this summer. Neither Surrey nor the ICC has issued any official comment on the situation so far.

PSL Form And Recent International Appearance
Despite the off-field developments, Nawaz has been actively participating in the ongoing Pakistan Super League, representing Multan Sultans. He featured in their recent clash against Rawalpindi, returning figures of 0/26 from three overs in Karachi. However, his overall performance this season has been below expectations.
The positive test is believed to date back to the T20 World Cup earlier this year in Sri Lanka, where Nawaz played all seven matches for Pakistan. During the campaign, he managed 15 runs with the bat while picking up seven wickets, as the team exited in the Super 8 stage.
