Rohit Sharma has opened up about the emotional hug he shared with Virat Kohli after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados. He said the moment felt like the peak of years spent growing, struggling and competing together. Both senior players knew this tournament was their final chance to win the T20 world title.
“There was so much riding on us to take the team through. It’s not that the other guys were not keen or hungry enough, but [we were]… I don’t like to say that word, but the seniormost in that squad. And we have played a lot of cricket together,” Rohit said.
“In fact, when he came into the team, I was only a year old in the team. So, literally, we did everything together, played a lot of cricket together, except for the IPL. And we have seen a lot of setbacks as well with the World Cups. So, for both of us, we knew it was our last T20 World Cup, so it made it even more special,” he added.
Rohit enjoyed an excellent World Cup, scoring 257 runs at a strike rate of 156.71. Kohli had a tough run overall but produced a crucial 76 off 59 balls in the final to guide India to 176 for 7.
The duo ended their T20 and Test careers earlier this year, but both are now working toward spots in India’s 2027 World Cup plans. They returned strongly in the ODI series against South Africa, with Kohli scoring two back-to-back centuries.
