Shubman Gill is expected to miss the rest of 2025 due to a nerve injury from the Kolkata Test and may return in January next year.
Shubman Gill faces a lengthy recovery after aggravating a neck injury during the first Test in Kolkata. Gill had retired hurt after three balls and spent a day under medical supervision. Recent assessments indicate a nerve-related injury, and he has received an injection to ease the symptoms.
The 26-year-old travelled to Guwahati with the squad but was ruled out of the second Test on the eve of the match. Gill later flew to Mumbai for further consultation with spinal specialist Dr Abhay Nene. The findings have been shared with chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Reports suggest he may miss the rest of 2025, with a potential return expected early next year.

“Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series,” news agency PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.
New Zealand Series in January Targeted for Return
Acccording to The Times of India, team management prefers caution with the T20 World Cup scheduled for February–March next year. Gill may only rejoin competitive cricket during the New Zealand series beginning January 11. He must complete a rest phase before starting rehabilitation. This also rules him out of the five-match T20I series against South Africa beginning December 9. India will host South Africa for three ODIs from November 30 as well.
