Tilak Varma pulled off a stunning boundary catch reminiscent of Suryakumar Yadav’s World Cup final effort as India suffered a heavy defeat against Australia in Melbourne.
Star India batter Tilak Varma pulled off a brilliant catch on the boundary line during the second T20I against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, a moment that reminded many of Suryakumar Yadav’s iconic catch in the T20 World Cup final last year.

The moment unfolded in the fifth over of Australia’s chase when Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Travis Head for 28. Head tried to loft a length ball over long-off, but Tilak read it perfectly, sprinted to his left, and completed a sharp catch near the boundary line.
Showing great composure, Varma lobbed the ball in the air before stepping out and returning to finish the catch cleanly. Watch the video here:
The catch drew instant comparisons to Suryakumar’s famous grab to remove David Miller in the 2024 World Cup final, which proved to be a turning point in India’s defence of 176. In that final, Suryakumar’s effort to dismiss Miller sealed India’s victory over South Africa and became one of the most memorable moments in Indian cricket history.
How Did The Match Pan Out?
Although Varma’s effort electrified the crowd, his day with the bat was short-lived as he was dismissed for a two-ball duck earlier in the match. Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood tore through India’s top order with a lethal spell that left the visitors reeling.
“Somehow, we knew that he is going to give us this much difficulty. And you know the challenges, so obviously the way he bowled today, even I got surprised. I haven’t seen something like this in T20s. And this is something new for me as well. Because I am a batter that wants to dominate. But when I was seeing on the other side that how he is bowling, and even to me as well, seems like he had a plan and he was just executing it.”

Hazlewood’s brilliance dismantled India’s batting lineup as Australia cruised to a four-wicket win. In front of a 82,438-strong crowd, India endured one of their most disappointing outings, with nine batters failing to reach double digits as they were bowled out for just 125 in under 19 overs.
Only Abhishek Sharma, who is in sublime form, stood firm amid the collapse with a fighting 68 off 37 deliveries. Partnering with Harshit Rana (35 off 33), he stitched a vital 56-run stand that helped India cross the 100-run mark after Hazlewood’s fiery 3/13 had reduced them to 49/5.
Hazlewood bowled 15 dot balls in his four-over spell, breaking the backbone of India’s innings and virtually ending the contest within the first 20 minutes of play.
