Abhishek Sharma Admits India’s Young Batters Struggled Against Australia’s Pace

India’s rising star opened up on the challenges faced by the young lineup in the second T20I against Australia

Star India batter Abhishek Sharma admitted that the young and inexperienced lineup was exposed to some quality bowling from Australia in the second T20I at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, adding that they were undone by the extra pace.

Playing his maiden international series in Australia, Abhishek said that while the team had expected pace and bounce, they were still surprised by how effectively the Australian bowlers used the conditions.

“The challenge is that a lot of players, including me, are on their first tour here. We knew about the extra bounce and pace, but still, the way they bowled surprised us,” Abhishek said during the post-match press conference. “They were very disciplined with their line and length and credit goes to them,” he added.

Adjusting to Early Wicket Collapse

Abhishek emerged as the top scorer for India with a fighting 68-run knock, but his efforts went in vain as Australia clinched the game by four wickets. The left-hander, who opened the innings, revealed that India’s aggressive batting plan had to be adjusted after losing quick wickets early on.

“We planned to dominate up front, but it was a little unexpected for us. When wickets are falling in front of you, no matter who the batter is, you have to play for the team,” Abhishek said.

“The wicket was difficult; it was not easy to hit shots,” the star batter added. Reflecting on his fearless approach with the bat, Abhishek credited the team management for giving him the confidence to play freely.

“When I play, I try to bring the bowler under pressure. This approach has its ups and downs, but my captain and coach have always supported me,” he said. “They are clear that I should play my natural game and when they say that, it gives me confidence,” Abhishek added. India will play the third T20I of the series on Sunday, November 2, at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
