‘Barely Got to Bat’: Moeen Ali Reveals Reason Behind Choosing PSL Over IPL

Moeen Ali explained his decision to skip the IPL and join the Karachi Kings in PSL 2026, citing limited opportunities, career longevity, and a shorter schedule that better suited his priorities.

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali opted to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) instead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) this season. The decision came as both leagues continue to overlap in recent seasons.

Several overseas players now prefer PSL due to better chances of regular selection. When queried about his switch, Moeen opened up about facing reduced demand in the IPL in the past 2 years. He signed with Karachi Kings to secure consistent game time. He added that the PSL’s shorter duration also suits his personal schedule.

“There are a few reasons. I’m 38 now, and I still want to play, do well, and extend my career as much as possible. Karachi was a big factor in my decision to come here. It’s a shorter competition, which works better for my family and me,” Moeen said on ARY Podcast.

Notably, Moeen Ali had featured for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025 but struggled to make an impact. He scored 5 runs in 6 matches and picked up 6 wickets. He later lost his place in the playing XI due to limited contributions.

“Last year in the IPL, I played only half the games and barely got to bat, just twice. At this stage, I want to be out there; I want to bat. I feel like I’m playing good cricket towards the back end of my career, and I just want to keep going,” he continued.

“You’re never guaranteed a place anywhere, even here, but I just want to enjoy my cricket as much as I can. I’ve always wanted to experience the PSL, but unfortunately, it slightly clashes with the IPL,” Moeen Ali concluded.
